Chapter seventeen

Chad

So, she’s not been at work for a total of five days now. I’m sitting in my office, annoyed that I’m putting together this campaign without her and even more annoyed that she won’t even talk to me. I get through the day anyway and leave just as I have for the past five days. I go down to the car and sit there in silence for a moment. All I need is a little time with her. Just a few words to explain everything. I can tell her about Sara and Freya and how important they are to me. Maybe she won’t be upset and I can get her to come back to work. Or maybe I should just go home.

“Sir?” the driver calls from the front seat. “Is everything alright?”

I don’t answer his question. Instead I order him, “Take me to Miss Gould’s apartment.” I’ve got to see her. Grace said this was a bad idea and maybe it is, but I can’t just sit around and wait anymore. I am worried about her to the point I am having difficulty sleeping at night. I need to find out what’s going on. And maybe she’ll yell at me or tell me that I am being a rude, arrogant prick, but that’s fine. That’s better than the cold silence I am receiving. Ten minutes later, I’m standing at the door to her building. It’s locked this time, so I press the buzzer to her apartment. A few moments go by and I hear her voice. “Hello?”

“Tara? It’s Chad. Please open up.”

My request is answered with silence. I should buzz her again. Just as I am about to, I’m surprised when the door buzzes and unlocks. I take a calming breath and let myself in. I walk to her apartment and I knock. A minute passes by before the door opens and there she is. Concern fills me tenfold when I take her in. Tara looks bad. Her hair is tied up in a wad on top of her head. She’s wearing sweats and her face looks sallow and drawn. She’s got giant circles under her eyes, even. She looks about five pounds skinnier and she has the faint smell of food and medicine swirling around her.

Okay. So. Maybe she really is sick.

“Hey,” I say softly. “Can I come in?”

She steps aside, letting me in. Her apartment is a mess. Dirty dishes on the coffee table. A blanket is laid out on the couch as if that’s where she’s been sleeping. The television is on and playing some daytime court show.

“What do you want?” she asks me tersely.

“I came to check on you,” I reply tentatively. “You haven’t been at work. You’re not answering my calls. I just wanted to make sure you’re okay.” I take another look at her in the yellow light of the only lamp in the room. She seems to look even worse than she did at the door.

“God, you really are sick, aren’t you?”

She gives me a cold look, then sits down on the couch.
